Cook Authentic Hungarian Goulash at Home
Hungarian goulash is more than just a dish; it’s a piece of culinary heritage that brings a taste of Hungary to your table. Here’s how you can create this hearty and warming stew at home, with ingredients readily available at Taste From Hungary Magyar Bolt, right next to our restaurant.
Ingredients:
•500g beef chuck, cut into cubes
•2 tablespoons vegetable oil
•2 medium onions, chopped
•2 cloves of garlic, minced
•2 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika
•1 teaspoon caraway seeds
•1 bay leaf
•Salt and pepper to taste
•2 tomatoes, diced
•2 bell peppers, sliced
•500ml beef stock
•2 potatoes, peeled and cubed (optional)
Instructions:
1. Heat the Oil: In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until they are translucent.
2. Brown the Beef: Add the beef cubes to the pot and brown them on all sides.
3. Add Spices and Vegetables: Stir in the paprika, caraway seeds, and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper. Add the diced tomatoes and sliced bell peppers. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables start to soften.
4. Simmer: Pour in the beef stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 1-1.5 hours, or until the beef is tender. If using, add the potatoes in the last 30 minutes of cooking.
5. Serve: Adjust the seasoning if necessary, and serve hot. Enjoy your goulash with a slice of rustic bread.
